Summer Book Giveaway: Word Study That Sticks: Best Practices by Pamela Koutrakos

Pamela Koutrakos’s book, Word Study That Sticks: Best Practices, came to me at the perfect moment. I’d been talking that week with some teachers I support and we needed some new ideas to breathe life in to word study. Word Study That Sticks was the resources I needed to facilitate great discussions when collaborating with teachers.

Listen to the glowing endorsements:

This book showcases the joy of word study not as an isolated skill, but as an essential ingredient  in creating empowered, purposeful readers. The perfect combination of research and practice, Pam reminds us that word study is an engaging, inquiry-based, non-negotiable element in ELA instruction. With its practical lessons, easy-to-implement activities, and motivating games, Word Study That Sticks is a must-have for any reading teacher, literacy coach, or love of language.

–Molly Ness, PhD, Author of Think Big With Think Alouds

As a presenter I’m asked if I know of a good book for word study. I found one in Pamela Koutrakos’s Word Study That Sticks! She breaks it down for the novice and streamlines for the old pro. It’s truly word study that sticks.

–Jeff Anderson, Author of Patterns of Power

Pam’s book is organized in three parts; Part One defines for the reader what curious, creative word study is in concise, clear terms, Part Two shares her wisdom on fostering engagement and independence in readers as they study words, and Part Three is full of powerful tools for helping teachers to teach for transfer.

I was struck with the simple, yet profound, ways that kids can joyfully engage in meaningful, thoughtful, work around understanding language. Pam has mined some powerful strategies for setting up word study time in any classroom, strategies for digging deeply in to words, setting goals with kids based on their unique needs and teaching to the point of true transfer and independence.
